Apple’s iPhone shipments in India during the July-September quarter increased 8% year on year and 44% sequentially to 1.7 million units amid aggressive discounts as the market continues to see a strong demand for premium smartphones, Cyber Media Research (CMR) has said.
The market research firm expects strong iPhone sales in the ongoing quarter as well as consumer demand for premium smartphones remains resilient.
Apple is expected to secure its highest-yet market share in the country in 2022, improving on a record 4.4% in 2021, CMR said.
“In Q3, 2022 and in the run-up to the all-important festive season, the older generation Apple iPhones, including the iPhone 12 series and iPhone 13 series, posted gains on the back of aggressive discounts,” Prabhu Ram, head – industry intelligence group at CMR, told ET.
The newly-introduced iPhone 14 series too saw strong shipments though it was introduced late in the quarter, driven by early manufacturing and strong consumer demand, Ram added.
During the September quarter, iPhones 12 and 14 were the best performing among Apple smartphones, cornering 28% market share each, followed by iPhone 13 series that accounted for 26% of all iPhone shipments. The older iPhone 11 series managed to capture 18% share.
Apple began manufacturing the iPhone 14 in India within 10 days of its global launch at its manufacturing partner Foxconn’s Tamil Nadu plant. The company has been making iPhones in India since 2017.
Apple said iPhone sales in India had nearly doubled on year in the June 2022 quarter.
